The Corona
The corona is the Sun's outer atmosphere. During solar eclipses and with special equipment it is visible as a pearly white crown surrounding the Sun. The temperature of the corona is over 1,000,000 degrees, much greater than the surface below which is only 6000 degrees. Scientists have not yet agreed on why this is so and it remains unexplained.

The Solar Wind originates from the corona; gases accelerated to speeds of between 400 and 800 km/s. The winds reach Earth and are deflected by its magnetic field.
